We partnered with Austin architecture firm Thoughtbarn to both manage the construction and fabricate various aspects of their new office. The project utilized the existing footprint of an old mom and pop garage, rebuilding a new shell adhering to the volume of the previous structure, only adding two pop dormers to bring in eastern and western light. The cedar siding drapes downwards on each facade, rendered in a saturated blue stain. The interior is utilitarian and crisp, utilizing Radiatta Pine plywood cladding that is slightly pickled to tonally create a modern space. The new interior opens to the back yard that is shaded by existing pecans. As a laboratory as well as an office, the structure utilized hempwool as insulation throughout the structure and continued its fibrous explorations using pressed wood fiber acoustic panels as the ceiling material. It is delightfully quiet and climatically comfortable throughout the year.
